Scum of the Earth

To this very hour we go hungry and thirsty, we are in rags, we are brutally treated, we are homeless. We work hard with our own hands. When we are cursed, we bless; when we are persecuted, we endure it; when we are slandered, we answer kindly. Up to this moment we have become the scum of the earth, the refuse of the world.  (I Corinthians 4:11-13)

We went to church last night at a place called Scum of the Earth Church.  It was amazing, the mix of people.  From hipsters, to punks, to the homeless, all worshiping the one true God.  The only God who can bring all of these people together.

A meal was served before the service, breakfast burritos with an optional fire-hot salsa.  We have all been in churches where we have felt judged, where we haven’t felt completely accepted.  At SOTE I felt that it didn’t matter how I worshipped, what I said, or what I looked like, I was accepted.

When the original leadership was planning the church they asked themselves “If you were going to create a church that would be the kind of place in which you could be yourself, to which you could invite friends and they’d feel comfortable, what would it look like?”  Over the past 8 years it looks like Scum kept true to answering that question.  Homeless men and women were worshipping next to professionals, who were worshipping next to teenage skaters and punks.  All feeling the presence of God.  All the scum of the earth, all forgiven, accepted, and loved.
